The beginnings of Mr Beans Coffee Co.

Mr Beans Coffee Co. started when we realised that the best coffee beans and blends were often being reserved for professional baristas and expensive coffee shops. We wondered whether there would be a market for those wanting to enjoy these premium coffee beans at home and so after much research (and some hard bargaining with the UK’s major coffee distributors!) our web shop was born.

Who was Mr Beans?

Born in Tooting, London UK in 1851, Bertie Timlins, was the eldest son of perfumer Noel and seamstress Marnie Timlins.

After graduating from St Dunstan’s college he found employment in the city of London and worked for most of his twenties at Coutts Bank. Never overly-enamoured with his work Bertie found the London social scene, which at the time largely centered around London’s bustling coffee houses, a far more enjoyable focus of his time.

Bertie’s frequent appearances in the coffee houses around the city – never staying in any one establishment for more than a single cup – quickly earned him the nickname ‘Mr Beans’ from the proprietors and other regulars and perpetuated the widespread belief that he was the best source of information, on any subject, in the whole of the city given his fondness for conversation and inquisitive nature.

It is believed that he was, for a time, the single most-referenced source for news articles in the whole of the UK as a result. It is also suspected that he was the inspiration behind the idiom ‘to spill the beans’ which means to divulge information.
